Overview
The Trout Creek Swamp is a 28-acre brown moss fen located 10 miles west of Sisters. The wetland has historically supported a range of species including insectivorous sundew, bladderworts and a unique brown moss known to be extremely rare outside of Canada.
Since the 1930’s ditching efforts have significantly changed the hydrology of the site. Though the site still supports a wide range of species, their habitat is diminishing through the encroachment of lodge pole pines and the establishment of an invasive weed, reed canary grass.
Partners and Goals
The Upper Deschutes Watershed Council has joined with the U.S. Forest Service Sisters Ranger District to implement a two-year project to restore the hydrology of the Trout Creek Swamp. Ultimately, the effort is intended to improve downstream habitat conditions for redband trough, control invasive weeds and enhance the rate wetland habitat of the swamp itself.
